Black Diamond BBQ – Indianapolis, IN

Went with a big group to Black Diamond BBQ in Indianapolis.  I’m not really a BBQ connoisseur but I know what I like in a BBQ.  I like pork ribs and sometimes beef ribs if it’s not too greasy.  I also like my ribs to be crunchy on the outside and falling off the bone.  I guess I’m also a bbq sauce on the rib type of person too.  Having said all this, I think Black Diamond is closest to a Memphis style BBQ.  The ribs are served dry and you dip it in a tomato based sauce.

This place is off Binford on the NE side of Indianpolis, right inside of the I465.  There’s a nice link on their webpage.

Baked beans were very sweet and slightly smokey and had a distinct cinnamon flavour(probably cassia).  It’s tasty but the sweetness will pile up on you very quickly, so  I suggest small portions of the beans.

Green beans were a little watery, but I kind of like them this way.  It isn’t drenched in butter.  Most of my friends really liked this, but I’m not a huge green beans fan.  It was decent.

Mac n Cheese is of good quality.  The cheese is not too hard or soft, a good saucy consistency.  The pasta is just under al dente, which works but isn’t my preference.  There are bits of bbq meat in it making it for little suprise bites of yumminess.  I would get this again when visiting.

Chunky and acidic, it’s a pretty good compliment and break from the sweet and salty of almost everything else.  I remember having quite a bit of this.

I’m a sucker for good corn.  Indiana has very fresh and sweet corn almost all year round.  Suffice it to say this was a sweet steamed corn without butter.  Just the way I like it.

Rib Tips

The main part of the mean were two plates of ribs and one plate of rib tips.  Both were nice and crunchy on the outside and fairly chewy on the inside.  The ribs come out dry and are a bit on the salty side.  The savoriness is cut well with the sweet sauces.    There are 3 types of sauces, sweet, mild and spicy.  I actually preferred the spicy since the sweet was a bit too sweet as well as the mild.  These are pretty tasty ribs and seem to reheat well as we had a ton of leftovers.

Epic Turkey Leg

Ok, so if you’ve ever had turkey leg before, usually it’s a little tough.  This one is stewed and I think braised in it’s own sauces.  It’s slightly savory with the turkey being the featured flavour.  The meat is tender and falls off the bone.  I was pretty blown away by this turkey leg and will be returning for more.  Best Turkey Leg I’ve ever had.

Very tasty sweet potato pie.  It’s not overly sweet and goes pretty well with some whipped cream.  We were so stuffed we ate this later.

A pretty tasty single serving type apple pie.  The weird part is that it was actually a little soggy in the middle at the crust so it doesn’t come out quite in the traditonal pie form.  It’s more like gobs of apple sludge.  It’s very sweet, and could maybe have benifitted with a little more baking.

When we got there it was kind of late, but we were greeted with the smiling face of Tony one of the owners of this fine establishment.  Thanks for your hospitality Tony, we’ll be back for more of that Turkey Leg!

Bottom Line: Come here and order the best Turkey Leg you’ll probably ever have.  Next time I’ll have to try the BBQ chicken also.
